Rolf-Bernhard Essig (* 1963 in Hamburg ) is a German author , literary critic , entertainer and lecturer . He is a grandson of the writer Hermann Essig .

Essig grew up in Kulmbach and studied German and history at the Otto Friedrich University in Bamberg . He then worked as a research assistant and librarian before writing his dissertation (Dr. phil.) With the title The Open Letter in 2000 . History and function of a journalistic form from Isokrates to Günter Grass published. Essig has curated exhibitions on the subject of the open letter , for example in the museums for communication in Nuremberg and Frankfurt. The Museums for Communication in Nuremberg, Berlin, Frankfurt am Main as well as the Museum of Everyday Culture in Waldenbuch and the Altona Museum have been showing their exhibition “My name is a rabbit! On the track of idioms ”, which can be seen in the Focke Museum Bremen until June 2020 .

As a lecturer, Essig u. a. worked at the universities of Bamberg , Samara and Togliatti and taught literary studies and literary criticism as well as creative writing . Essig is the author of non-fiction and children's books as well as articles for the FAZ , Die Zeit , the Süddeutsche Zeitung , the Frankfurter Rundschau and others. Under the title "vinegar essences" ran his weekly column about German idioms in Germany Kultur . With his wife Gudrun Schury he presented the series “Migranten des Wortschatzes” for WDR from autumn 2008 to the end of 2011 . The column “Gone to the Bottom” was published from December 2014 to December 2016 in Yacht magazine . From September 2012 to July 2017, SWR1 Rhineland-Palatinate ran his daily radio column “And now butter with the fish. Dr. Essigs kleine Sprichwortkunde ", since January 2017 on MDR Saxony the weekly column" Everything in butter or everything vinegar? ".

Since 2008 he is touring - especially as an expert in Proverbs - with edutainment programs for language by Germany and occurs among others at festivals such as the Erlangen Poetry Festival , in Germersheim Cultural Summer and the Hausacher reading Lenz. With Franz Tröger , he has been forming the musical-literary duo The Chipmunks since 2013 .

In 2018 he and his wife Gudrun Schury received the Berganza Prize of the Bamberg Art Association and a special prize from the jury of the Walter Serner Prize for his text Überfahren .
