The Canary Lizard ( Gallotia galloti ) species of lizard from the Lacertidae family .

features

The canary lizard reaches a total length of 44 centimeters, which makes it one of the medium-sized species within the genus Gallotia . The males reach a head-torso length of up to 14.5 centimeters, the females remain somewhat smaller with up to 13.5 centimeters. The back scales are unkeeled and very small. A large temple plate ( massetericum ) is usually present at the temples. The collar of the species is smooth-edged at its rear edge. The Canary Lizard is colored and drawn very variably.

Systematics

The species is divided into:

  • Gallotia galloti galloti ( Oudart , 1839) in the south and center of Tenerife
  • Gallotia galloti eisentrauti Bischoff , 1982 in the north of Tenerife
  • Gallotia galloti insulanagae Martin , 1985 on the Roque Fuera de Anaga off the coast of Tenerife
  • Gallotia galloti palmae ( Boettger & Müller , 1914) on La Palma

habitat

The Canary Lizard prefers open, stony landscapes and lives as a follower of culture, especially in the natural stone walls typical of the Canary Islands. It feeds on plants and small invertebrates.

The Canary Island lizard is quite common in its natural habitat, is even seen in places as a nuisance and pest (especially in viticulture) and is fought by farmers with poison and traps.

Etymology and history of research

Paul Louis Oudart is considered to be the author of the Canary Island Lizard ( Gallotia galloti ), but the publication history is a bit complicated. Paul Gervais had already published the name in front of the blackboard, but since this article did not contain a description, the name is considered a noun nudum . The table for the species appeared in 1839 in Histoire naturelle des Iles Canaries before Gabriel Bibrons and André Marie Constant Duméril published the description in Erpétologie générale from the same year. Paul Gervai's description of the panel in Histoire naturelle des Iles Canaries was not made until 1844. Thus, Oudart is now considered the author of the species. The species name was named after Auguste Gallot .
