Kanderfirn
The Kanderfirn is a valley glacier in the Bernese Alps . It lies in the background of the Gastern Valley in the area of the Swiss municipality of Kandersteg in the canton of Bern . The ice stream with a pronounced tongue was about 6.75 km long with an area of almost 14 km². By 2010, its length had been reduced by around 300 meters.
The west-exposed glacier starts on the western flank of the Tschingelhorn and on the almost completely ice-covered Petersgrat (up to 3205 m above sea level), over which the canton border between Bern and Valais runs. The Petersgrat is an important ice supply area for the Kanderfirn. This flows with an even gradient of around 10% to the southwest, flanked on the north side by the steep rock faces of the Blüemlisalp .
In its lowest section, the Kanderfirn is also called the Alpetli Glacier . The glacier tongue is currently (as of 2010) at an altitude of 2300 m above sea level. M. above a steep drop in the Gastern Valley. The glacier is drained by the Kander , which flows through the Kandertal to Lake Thun . To the northeast, the Kanderfirn is connected to the Tschingelfirn via the firn- covered Tschingelpass , and via the glaciated Petersgrat to the southeast with the Tellingletscher and the Üsser Talgletscher . The Mutthornhütte of the Swiss Alpine Club SAC is located on the rocky slope of the Mutthorn south of this pass crossing at 2900 m above sea level. It can only be reached via the glacier, either from the Gastern Valley or the Lauterbrunnen Valley .
