The Mutthornhütte is a mountain hut belonging to the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) in the canton of Bern in Switzerland .
location
It lies below the Mutthorn between the Tschingelfirn and the Kanderfirn at an altitude of 2901 m above sea level. M. This height was determined several times by the country's topography between 1910 and 1950 and in 1951 it was “definitely set at 2901 meters”.
history
The first hut was built in 1896 by the SAC section Weissenstein, Canton Solothurn and enlarged in 1908 and rebuilt in 1913 and 1925. At that time, the hut had 50 places and no winter room.
Between 1950 and 1952, the current building was created slightly shifted and the old building was demolished after its completion. On the initiative of Ulrich Imboden (1911–1988), Hermann Geiger (1914–1966) and his Piper undertook transport flights to the Mutthornhütte for the Ulrich Imboden company from 1951 onwards. The goods were packaged accordingly and dropped precisely. Next to the Mutthornhütte on the Kanderfirn (Alpetli Glacier) at an altitude of 2900 m above sea level. M. the first successful glacier landings were carried out by Hermann Geiger in 1952. The new building of the Mutthornhütte was expanded to today's comfort in 1980.
Access
The hut can be reached from Stechelberg in around seven hours (approx. 2000 meters difference in altitude). From the Gasterental the ascent takes six hours. The ascent from Kiental via Gamchilücke takes eight hours and from Goppenstein via Petersgrat it takes six hours. The path leads over glaciers from all sides. The Mutthornhütte should only be approached with ropes and crampons. The hut is managed in the high season and offers 100 beds.
