The Petersgrat is a wide ridge in the mountain chain that is completely glaciated except for a rock ridge in the eastern part , which extends from the Lötschenpass in the west over the Hockenhorn to the Tschingelhorn . As part of this chain, the Petersgrat is part of the European main watershed .

The Petersgrat forms a considerable part of the nutrient area of ​​the northern Kanderfirn , whose runoff drains over the Aare and the Rhine to the North Sea . To the south, the ice flows over the Tellingletscher and Üsser Talgletscher into the Lötschental . The meltwater reaches the Mediterranean via Lonza and Rhone .

The 3205.6  m above sea level. The highest point of the ridge is located in the eastern part on a rock ridge that runs down from the Tschingelhorn. At 3202  m above sea level M. few meters lower the wide glaciated summit in the western part, the amount of which is subject, however, by variations in ice thickness over the years changes.

Alpinism

The Petersgrat offers far-reaching views of the neighboring mountains (including Blüemlisalp in the north and Bietschhorn in the south) as well as the Valais Alps to Mont Blanc . It is easy to reach from the Mutthornhütte to the north ( T4 / L ). An ascent is also possible from the Lötschental to the south. The normal routes lead over the Petersgrat to the ascent of the Tschingelhorn and the Lauterbrunnen-Breithorn to the east (over the weather gap ).

The Petersgrat is designated as a mountain landing site and is used for heli-skiing .
