history

Representation of Kannur from the 17th century.

The area of today's Kannur district was under the influence of European colonial powers early on: from the beginning of the 16th century, the city of Kannur became one of the first bases of the Portuguese in India, and in the middle of the 17th century, Kannur came under Dutch rule. The British , however, settled in Thalassery (Tellicherry) in 1682 , while the French maintained a base in Mahé , which is adjacent to the south. As a result of the Anglo-Mysore Wars , the entire area of today's district was in 1792 a part of British India and was part of the district Malabar in the Madras Presidency incorporated.

After Indian independence, the state of Kerala was formed in 1956 as part of the States Reorganization Act according to the language borders of Malayalam from the Malabar district and the Travancore-Cochin Federation . The district of Kannur was formed from the northern parts of the former Malabar district. At the same time, the area adjacent to the north around the city of Kasaragod , which had previously belonged to the South Kanara district (Dakshina Kannada), became part of Kerala and was incorporated into the Kannur district. In 1984 this area was detached from the Kannur district as an independent district of Kasaragod .
