history

Calicut, on the coast of Malabar (1813)

The city of Kozhikode (Calicut) was the capital of its own kingdom from the 14th century, whose rulers were known as Zamorine . The city developed into the most important port on the northern Malabar coast and was visited by Arab spice traders. In 1498 the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama was the first European to land in Kappad, not far from Kozhikode. The Portuguese built a fortress in Kozhikode and fought several wars against the Zamorines and the Arabs allied with them during the 16th century.

In 1766, Hyder Ali , the ruler of Mysore, took the city of Kozhikode. With this, Kozhikode was drawn into the Mysore Wars between Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan and the British . 1792, at the end of the Third Mysore War , the area finally came under British rule and became part of the district Malabar in the Madras Presidency incorporated.

After Indian independence, the state of Kerala was formed in 1956 as part of the States Reorganization Act according to the language borders of Malayalam from the Malabar district and the Travancore-Cochin Federation . At the beginning of 1957, the Kozhikode district emerged from the central parts of the former Malabar district. In 1969, the new Malappuram district was formed from parts of the Kozhikode and Palakkad districts , and in 1980 the Wayanad district was created from parts of Kozhikode and Kannur .
