The canton of Ausserschwyz , officially the canton of Schwyz outer land , was a half-canton of Switzerland from 1831–1833 .

In 1831 the three Ausserschwyz districts of Vorderer Hof (today's village of Pfäffikon ), March and Einsiedeln and the Küssnacht district wanted to split off from the canton of Schwyz as part of the regeneration movement to form their own canton. The main reason was the political inferior position in relation to the "old frozen" part of the canton and the refusal of the conservative Schwyzers to tackle a constitutional revision in the spirit of the liberal movement.

The remaining half canton was called Innerschwyz . In addition to the old part of the country, this also included the rear courtyard , which corresponds to today's municipality of Wollerau .

The provisional administration of the canton of Ausserschwyz was appointed on January 6, 1831 at the liberal people's assembly in Lachen . However, the half-canton was only constituted after further mediation attempts on April 27, 1832. The Diet recognized the canton of Ausserschwyz provisionally on April 29, 1833 and allowed Landammann Joachim Schmid as the official envoy to the Federal Diet.

When Schwyz then took violent action against Küssnacht on July 31, 1833 under Colonel Theodor Ab-Yberg and occupied the district, the Diet intervened militarily in Schwyz and forced an agreement between the parties. The so-called "Küssnacht trade" was ended on October 23, 1833 with the introduction of a new constitution, which guaranteed full political equality throughout the canton. The costs of the federal intervention of 400,000 Swiss francs were initially to be fully charged to Central Switzerland, but were ultimately reduced to 100,000 Swiss francs.

The main town of the canton of Ausserschwyz was alternately Lachen and Einsiedeln .

It was not until 1848 that the rear courtyard merged with the front courtyard to form the Höfe district .
