The canton Padcaya is a municipality in the department Tarija in the South American Andean state Bolivia ; however, since 2009 the cantons in Bolivia are no longer listed as an official administrative unit.

location

The Cantón Padcaya is one of twelve cantons in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Padcaya in the province of Aniceto Arce . It borders in the north on the province of José María Avilés , in the west on the canton Chaguaya , in the southwest on the canton Rosillas , in the south on the canton La Merced , and in the southeast and east on the canton Orozas .

The canton lies between 21 ° 49 'and 21 ° 55' south latitude and 64 ° 34 'and 64 ° 02' west longitude. Its maximum extent in east-west direction is up to fifteen kilometers and in north-south direction up to eleven kilometers.

The canton Padcaya comprises eight localities, the central place of the canton is Padcaya with 1,133 inhabitants ( 2001 census ) in the central western part of the district. The mean height of the canton is 2200  m , in the ridges to the west and east of the canton with the Cerro Huancani (2,960 m) heights of up to 3,000 meters are reached.

The canton of Padcaya is located on the eastern edge of the Andean chains of Bolivia between the Altiplano in the west and the Bolivian Chaco lowlands in the east. The region's climate is semi-humid and exhibits a time-of-day climate in which the mean daily temperature fluctuations are greater than the temperature fluctuations over the course of the year.

The mean mean temperature of the region is 13.5 ° C (see Padcaya climate diagram), the monthly mean temperatures fluctuate between 9 ° C in June and July and 17 ° C in December and January. The annual precipitation is 630 mm, with a pronounced dry season from May to September with monthly precipitation below 10 mm, and a humidity period from December to February with monthly precipitation well over 100 mm.

  • 2010 : More recent data for the canton are not yet available, the update for the Municipio Padcaya assumes a population increase of around ten percent for the period from 2001 to 2010

The population density of the Municipio Padcaya at the 2001 census was 4.2 inhabitants / km², the life expectancy of newborns was 65.5 years, the literacy rate for those over 19 was 74 percent, namely 85 percent for men and 62 percent for Women ( 2001 ).

The region has only a small proportion of indigenous population, in the Municipio Padcaya 2.8% of the population speak the Quechua language .
