The cantonal referendum on the “New Citizens Hospital Solothurn” was a referendum in the Swiss canton of Solothurn that took place on June 17, 2012. The content of the vote is the approval of a commitment loan for the new construction of the Solothurn Citizens Hospital .

Background and content

The current Bürgerspital Solothurn was built in two steps, the old building 80 years ago and the new building from 1974. At this age it is no longer able to cope with future demands. For example, the current layout of the rooms is considered to be inefficient for business operations. The new building provides for an L-shaped hospital in which the bed wing connects the treatment wing and the utility wing .

According to calculations, the new building is cheaper than a renovation . At the same time, it is estimated that greater sustainability and lower energy consumption will save around CHF 200 million in operating costs over the next 40 years.

In order to finance the new building, which cost around 340 million euros, the cantonal referendum voted on an approval credit.

Voting result

With the exception of the Thierstein district , all districts of the canton accepted the bill. The proposal received the highest percentage of yes votes from the Solothurn district with 81.4%, which also had the highest voter turnout with 40.9%. The proposal was accepted with a share of 65.1% yes-votes and a participation of 38.4%.
