The Roman Catholic parish of the Church of St. Kanzian / Škocjan or Kanziankirche in Sankt Kanzian am Klopeiner See belongs to the diocese of Gurk within the Eberndorf / Dobrla vas deanery . The Kanziankirche is the Hll. Dedicated to the siblings Kanzius, Kanzian and Kanzianilla. It is a listed building.

St. Kanzian was an original parish of the Patriarchate of Aquileia and was permanently incorporated into the monastery when the Eberndorf monastery was founded in 1106 .

Building description

The church emerged from a former Romanesque choir tower church , to which a late Gothic polygonal choir with an upper storey was added in 1518 , and an early historical three-aisled nave with staggered aisles including the previous buildings in 1849–1860 . 1977-80 it was extended to the north by a wide hall with arched windows according to plans by Alfons Nessmann.

The choir is supported by two-tiered buttresses . The five-storey choir tower with twin acoustic windows was given an octagonal pointed gable helmet in the 19th century. The nave facades are structured by pilasters , the west facade with a round window and arched portal in wall recesses and crowned by a triangular gable, set off from the pent roofs of the aisles.

The interior is a three-aisled, three-bay hall with staggered side aisles in Romanesque proportions with early historic decor. All three naves have cross vaults. The eastern side yokes are somewhat widened to the north and south. Scenes from the Easter story are depicted in the arches of the central nave: the Mount of Olives , the Carrying of the Cross, the Crucifixion and the Resurrection. The stained glass from the second half of the 16th century in the east window of the north aisle depicts Mary Magdalene under the crucifix. Today's 19th century choir is short and ends straight. Here is the high altar.

Behind it is the Romanesque tower ground floor with a late Gothic star rib vault - the mantelpiece of the Romanesque triumphal arch consists of a plate, throat and rod - as well as the former Gothic choir with a five-quarter end and net rib vault on consoles.

Facility

The neo-baroque high altar and the romanized left side altar date from the middle of the 19th century. The high altar bears the statues of the church saints Kanzius and his siblings Kanzianus and Kanzianilla . The essay is the figure of God the Father in a halo.

The side altar houses a Mother of God and Child on the main floor , flanked by Saints Stephen and Sebastian, and Saint Elisabeth on the upper floor , surrounded by Saints Anthony the Great and John the Baptist . Due to the renovation from 1977-80, the side altar takes the position of the high altar.

The pulpit , built around 1770/80, is now used as an ambo . In the reliefs of their parapets, Jesus Christ is depicted as the Good Shepherd and the parable of the sower .

The late Gothic crucifix dates from 1510/20, the Stations of the Cross from the late 19th century. The votive picture of St. Ursula was painted by A. Melchior in 1862. A picture of the coronation of St. Kanzian from the 17th century hangs on the southern pillar.
