The Cape Arauco ( Spanish Cabo Arauco , in Argentina Cabo Ruso from Russian Мыс Русский Mys Russkij , German 'Russian Cape' ) is a cape consisting of ice cliffs in the northeast of Alexander I Island off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula . It marks the southern limit of the entrance to Marguerite Bay .
Scientists from the Fifth French Antarctic Expedition (1908–1910), led by polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot, discovered it. Participants of the 2nd Chilean Antarctic Expedition (1947–1948) named it Cabo 18 de Setiembre after the Chilean Independence Day. In 1962 the name was changed to the Chilean province of Arauco .
