The Kapella was a ferry of the Finnish shipping company Viking Line put into service in 1967 for use between Naantali , Mariehamn and Kapellskär . The ship remained in service until 1979 before it was sold to Greece as Nissos Chios and remained in service there until 1994. In 2006 the ferry was scrapped in Aliağa, Turkey .
history
The Kapella was ordered by Viking Line on July 27, 1965 at a price of 16 million Swedish kronor and was launched on September 11, 1966 in the shipyard of Brodogradiliste Titovo in Kraljevica under construction number 381. The delivery to the shipping company took place on April 10, 1967. After the transfer to Finland, the ship was able to start service between Naantali, Mariehamn and Kapellskär on September 4, 1967.
On November 13, 1967, a fire broke out in the sauna of the Kapella , but the crew was able to put it out using on-board means. Another incident occurred in March 1969 when the ship suffered engine damage and had to be towed to Stockholm for repairs . On September 15th of the same year the Kapella ran aground and was therefore out of order until December 1969 due to repairs.
On July 5, 1978, the ship came to the rescue of the Diana ferry, which was also part of the Viking Line and had run aground the day before . The Kapella berthed sideways at the wrecked ship and took over its passengers.
On June 7, 1979, the Kapella completed its last crossing for the Viking Line. Then she went to Greece under the name Nissos Chios and was used there from July 1979 as the only ship of the Chios Shipping Company between Rafina and Chios .
In 1982 the Nissos Chios switched to the route from Piraeus to Chios and Lesbos . On May 31, 1982, she collided with the quay wall in the port of Chios and was slightly damaged. In 1985 the Chios Shipping Company gave up the unprofitable service, the ship was henceforth in use for the shipping company Hellinikki Actoploia on the same route.
On September 14, 1994, the Nissos Chios suffered engine damage and was then laid up in Piraeus . The ship spent several years in Piraeus without returning to service. In September 2005 the ferry was listed and threatened to sink. In May 2006 the Nissos Chios was finally sold for scrapping in Aliağa, Turkey, after almost 12 years of idle time, where it was pulled onto the beach for demolition on June 6th.
