The Maria Einsiedeln chapel

The Maria Einsiedeln chapel is a chapel in the Schönenwegen district of the city of St. Gallen . It dates from 1770.

history

In the former municipality of Straubenzell , there was a wayside cross on an elevation in Schönenwegen that was maintained by the municipality. In 1680, a captain, Joh. Boppart, "called at St. Wolfgang", had a stone wayside shrine built in its place. This wayside shrine contained a group of vespers. Inside and outside it was provided with the coat of arms of the founder. There was also a depiction of Christ outside with the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well . This image gave the small sanctuary the popular name Jakobskapelle.

The wayside shrine was replaced by a real chapel by the official P. Iso Walser. The foundation stone for this was laid on July 2, 1770. Ferdinand Beer was appointed as the lead builder. The Benedictation took place on September 7th and the consecration on September 29th, 1770. It was dedicated to Our Lady of Einsiedeln , St. Anna and St. Elisabeth .

View from the choir side

The south-east facing chapel has a rectangular nave to which a drawn-in three-sided closed choir adjoins. An arched plaster ceiling has been drawn in that has two pairs of arched arch caps in the ship. The arched caps in the ship are above the four arched windows. The choir is windowless. In the western front there are two medallion-shaped prayer windows, which are located next to the arched entrance portal. There is no canopy. The roof ridge is continuous and the hipped roof is hipped over the choir. On the roof above the choir there is a square roof turret with an onion dome.

Interior decoration

The statue on the altar is still preserved from the original furnishings from 1770. It is a copy of the Hermit miraculous image with a height of 117 centimeters. Like the original, the Christ child holds the dove in his left hand, but the meat is not blackened. Likewise, the statue does not wear a robe.

The bell, with a diameter of 42.5 centimeters, bears the inscription "CRUX AVE SPES UNICA SUB TUUM PRESIDIUM CONFUGIMUS - JOHANN LEONHARD ROSENLECHER CAST ME IN GLORY OF GOD TO CONSTANCE 1770". She bears the pictures of Our Lady of Einsiedeln, the holy family and a crucifixion group.
