The Roman Catholic Maria Schnee chapel is located on the Bühel parcel in the Gaschurn municipality in the Bludenz district in Vorarlberg . It is consecrated to the Mother of God and belongs to the parish church of St. Michael and thus to the deanery of Montafon in the diocese of Feldkirch . The building from 1637 is a listed building . The chapel ( 975  m above sea level ) is about 270 m as the crow flies from the center of Gaschurn and is therefore at the southern end of the village (towards Partenen ) on a small hill ( Bühel ).

history

According to tradition, the Maria Schnee chapel was donated in 1637 by Lukas Tschofen and his wife Anna Clawothin as a vow for the successful recovery from a serious illness, together with a capital of 240 guilders , and built in the Baroque style. There is an inscription to this effect on the choir arch. The chapel and the small cemetery were opened on December 31, 1639 by the Roman Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Chur , Johannes VI. Flugi von Aspermont , consecrated.

The chapel was enlarged from 1660 to 1667. It is a popular place of pilgrimage in the Montafon and is also used for weddings and baptisms. The consecration day is August 5th "Maria Schnee".

Church building

It is a building with an approximately rectangular shape and a south-east / north-west orientation. To the southeast (altar) the outer walls are sloping. The chapel has a simple wooden door. The multi-part gable roof is equipped with wooden shingles and a tower with an onion helmet and a bell with the year 1637 protruding from the building . The tower and the attached sacristy are to the southwest.

The prayer room has a ceiling (hexagonal) modeled on a barrel vault, which is partially painted with pictures, and a retracted choir wall.

Furnishing

The inside of the chapel is equipped with a single column, in relation to the other furnishings, quite simple high altar in red and gold, which shows a statue with Mary with the child. The ceiling in the chancel and nave is lavishly painted, there are colorful wall decorations and sculptures.

There are depictions of the Turin shroud (on the altar of grace from the 17th century) and the legend "Maria Schnee" (ceiling picture on the right in the nave). The holy figures Lukas and Anna above the choir arch refer to Lukas Tschofen and his wife Anna Clawothin.

In contrast to the paintings are the very simple pews made of fir wood. Stations of the Cross can be found on panels.
