The Roman Catholic chapel Maria Schnee is in the district Winsau the town of Dornbirn in Dornbirn in Vorarlberg . It is consecrated to the Mother of God and belongs to the parish Dornbirn-Haselstauden and thus to the dean's office in Dornbirn in the diocese of Feldkirch . The building from 1872 is a listed building . The chapel ( 690  m above sea level on the Achrain ) is about 6 km as the crow flies from the city center of Dornbirn.

history

A wayside shrine has been in place since around 1756, following a fire-related destruction of some houses in Winsau in 1756. The wayside shrine stood by the roadside even after the first chapel was built (until around 1937).

The chapel built in 1872 replaced a smaller, older building from 1786. The initiator for the construction was the Dornbirn wine merchant Matthäus Thurnher , who made several other donations for church purposes (e.g. glass windows in the pilgrimage church of the Visitation in Haselstauden, chapel on Rhomberg , Schwendebach etc.). The chapel was inaugurated in 1873 by Pastor Gebhard Fink from the parish church in Markt.

During the Second World War , the two old Grassmayer bells had to be delivered.

The chapel is regularly maintained, in 1994/95 a general renovation took place, during which the altars, the ceiling fresco, the stations of the cross, the floor, the benches as well as the electrical systems and the lighting were renewed or renovated.

Church building

It is a building with a rectangular basic shape and south-west / north-east orientation and 3/8 choir. To the northeast (altar), the outer walls are rounded. The simple wooden door and the bell ridge on the gable roof with an octagonal pointed helmet are to the southwest. To the north of the choir is the attached sacristy .

The prayer room has a barrel vault and a retracted choir wall. There are rose windows in the facade and an arched window above the door.

Furnishing

The inside of the chapel is equipped with a classical high altar in front of which a people's altar has stood since 1987. To the right and left of the altar are baroque statues depicting Peter and Paul. The high altar picture as well as the pictures on both sides of the choir arch ( Saint Wendelin and Saint Martin ) come from Johann Kaspar Rick from Haselstauden . Under the picture of the Mother of God there is a lifelike representation of Maria Maggiore (Rome). The upper picture shows God the Father and the Holy Spirit . The ceiling painting shows the coronation of Mary .

Stations of the Cross were already in the chapel before 1872. Today's Stations of the Cross were installed by Father Bruno Fuchs (OC Bregenz) on August 1, 1877.
