Rhomberg ( 566  m above sea level ) is a district of the city of Dornbirn in Vorarlberg ( Austria ) outside the urban area . When Rhom mountain it is not a solitary standing mountain.

Origin of name

In earlier times Rhomberg was also written as Rauberg or Raberg. Even today, the term " Rauberg " is sometimes used next to Rhomberg on official maps . This word could be derived from the Middle High German rûch meaning inhospitable , barren. A reliable word derivation is not available.

In " schematism for Tyrol and Vorarlberg " and " Provincial Manual of Tyrol and Vorarlberg for the year 1847 ", the rotting R h Omberg as an independent hamlet out. Since there is already much older evidence for people with the name "Rhomberg", it can be assumed that this group was already named in this way or similarly in earlier times. According to the Dornbirn Lexicon, with reference to the Vorarlberger Landesarchiv, the name Rhomberg (Rauberg, Raberg) is said to have been mentioned for the first time in 1347 and is therefore one of the oldest documented names in Dornbirn.

Romberg is written in the street directory (without "h").

Well-known namesake: see Rhomberg .

Topography, geography, location and traffic

The district is about 1.3 km as the crow flies from the center of Dornbirn and can only be reached by motor vehicle via one road (via the Eulentobel) . A very steep field path and footpath leads from southwest to northeast from the last house (Romberg No. 4) to the higher hamlet of Bantling (also Bantlig - 646  m above sea level ). This path rises to around 185 m, around 62 meters in altitude, and thus has an average gradient of around 33%. The Maria vom Siege chapel is on this path, and a way of the cross with 14 stations leads to it. South-southeast of the Rhomberg lies the deeply cut Eulental (formerly "Mühletal"), through which the Bantlingergraben / Eulenbach flows.

Buildings and Infrastructure

The building Romberg No. 1 is a Rheintalhof from the 19th century with possibly older structures. The house has a strongly bent gable roof. A somewhat recessed residential building was connected to the west. House Romberg No. 2 adjoins this on the north-east side. It is a new building from the 1980s. The service wing and living area of house Romberg no. 3 are attached to it. House Romberg no. 4 is a separate courtyard in this row of houses. The house is provided with white Eternit shingles in the residential wing, the economic part has wood planking or is bricked.

Johann Kaspar Rick drew the construction plans for the Rhomberg Chapel . On the altarpiece in the chapel on Romberg is recorded: “ ... through gifts and foundations and voluntary work by the owners of the Rhomberg, especially Andreas Schmidinger, mainly through the sacrifice of the founder, Matthäus Thurnher, the current chapel was built in 1877 and the latter by the same equipped with everything. “The original bell with the inscription:“ Cast by Gebr. Graßmayr in Feldkirch, donated by Mathäus Thurnher. “Was cast in 1875 and had to be delivered in World War II.
