The Fischbach is a flowing body of water and the right upper course of the Fußenau Canal (to the Dornbirner Ach ) to Martinsruh in the city of Dornbirn , Dornbirn District , Vorarlberg , Austria . Today's Fischbach is formed from the confluence of the Eulenbach ( Palmern ) and the Steinebach ( 457  m above sea level ).

The Fischbach flows from the confluence about 500 m to the northeast, past the residential areas Am Wall and Büntlitten , then swings at an almost right angle for the remaining 3300 m of the watercourse to the northwest. At water kilometers 4.15, the Fischbach runs parallel to the former Fischbach plant (also: Rotfarb-Fabrik ) of the textile company FM Hämmerle and subsequently the settlement area of the city of Dornbirn. The Fischbach joins at the Fußenau plot with the Karlesgraben coming from the south at 405  m above sea level. A. to the Fußenauer Canal, which continues with the streamline of the Fischbach in the direction of the inflow of the Fischbach and then flows into the Dornbirner Ach .

The Fischbach is denatured almost along its entire length by artificial banks and an artificial brook bed. Its water flow varies greatly between very high after recent rainfall and poor after longer periods of drought.

Surname

The river name Fischbach comes from the originally abundance of fish and can be found in Vorarlberg in Dornbirn, Alberschwende , Doren , Hittisau , Sibratsgälle and Sulzberg . The Fischbach was eponymous for several parcels and streets in Dornbirn.

Earlier course and sources, and tributaries

The Fischbach (formerly also Vischbach or Quellenbächlein ) was fed by up to 15 sources in earlier times, the most important of which originated at the “Stöffelisbild” (today: the intersection of Kehlerstrasse - Eisengasse - Kreuzgasse). Probably since the 16th century its waters on the lower Bündtlitten absorbed the Steinebach and gave the lower course the name Fischbach . The course of the Fischbach or Steinebach was artificially relocated several times until it got the current course.

Tributaries

Today's Fischbach only has the Kehlenbach as a tributary at water kilometers 4.39 (from left). At water kilometers 2.36 the Fliederweggraben crosses the Fischbach without visibly merging.

The springs emerging in Quellengasse, which come from the water seeping away from the Fallenberg , originally also partially fed the Fischbach, but were also diverted and used for textile production.

Economic use

The Fischbach has already been used economically in many ways. Both for energy generation, as a fresh water supplier and as a waste water discharge for the textile industry. Until the early 1970s, sewage was discharged into the Fischbach unfiltered.

Flood protection and torrent barriers

The danger of flooding from the brook is still present for the Dornbirn settlement area. To relieve the Fischbach, a 475 m long relief tunnel is currently being planned and explored below the Zanzenberg , through which overwater can be diverted into the Dornbirner Ache in the final stage . The exploratory drilling began in February 2016. The tunnel should begin at about 5.90 kilometers of water (GwKm) of the Steinebach and flow into the Dornbirner Ach at GwKm 15.91 (Achbrücke at the building yard), with the last 200 m to be run as an open canal.
