history

The etymology of the name Zanzenberg has not yet been clarified. What is certain is that the name of a vineyard was mentioned as early as 1431 in a Hohenems document. The well-known Dornbirn textile industrialist Viktor Hämmerle had a park with walking paths and viewpoints designed in the 19th century, probably based on the Innsbruck Bergisel , of which only remains are preserved today. He was modeled on the "Gloriette" built in 1856 by the manufacturer Johann Georg Ulmer, a small viewing pavilion on the Zanzenberg, which is still partially preserved today and was later bought by Viktor Hämmerle. The basic current design of the Zanzenberg as a local recreation and walking area probably goes back to Hämmerle's plans.

The southwest corner of the Zanzenberg is known as "Albertshöhe", as it is said to have been the favorite place of residence of the Dornbirn engineer Albert Hilbe (1822–1898). In 1997 the international scout camp Eurocamp of the scout group Dornbirn was inaugurated on the summit of the Zanzenberg . Since then, there have been regular camps and other events organized by the Dornbirn Boy Scout Group (such as the annual burning of the Boy Scouts ) on Zanzenberg.

A flood relief tunnel from the Steinebach into the Dornbirner Ache has been drilled across the Zanzenberg since spring 2018 (see: Flood protection and torrent barriers on the Steinebach ).

Biotope

The deciduous forests on the Zanzenberg are partly due to the redesign by Hämmerle as a nature park. On the steep slopes of the Zanzenberg there are very beautiful and largely natural deciduous mixed forests, which differ greatly depending on their exposure. The south to south-west oriented slope towards the Vordere Achmühle is characterized by pedunculate oak / hornbeam forests. In terms of composition, these stands are similar to the mixed deciduous forests of the postglacial warm season. As relics, they are worth protecting and are of scientific interest. On the northeast exposed slope against the Steinebach there are mainly brown earth, beech forests and a forest goat's beard - maple forest - ash forest . However, this stock was heavily cleared a few years ago in the course of security measures.

Special features of the plant world is the presence of endangered species elm , maple , hornbeam, Sommerlinde , holly leaves , foothills spindle tree , Crataegus laevigata and species of arum , Feldrose , twayblade , wild ginger , deer tongue , Black Columbine , Norway maple and forest Geißbart .
