Palmern refers to a district in Dornbirn Oberdorf ( 700  m above sea level ) with ten residential buildings and a large parcel of land ( Balma ) located in the same place .

Origin of name

Where the name Palmern comes from is not certain. The name is mentioned in 1715 and could be traced back to a family name. Palmer is a family name that is particularly found in the English- speaking world. In Swedish , the family name Palmér is written. Johann Christoph Adelung states in his work: Grammatical-Critical Dictionary of High German Dialect , Vienna 1811, that in Swedish every stick or stick and also a pilgrim's staff is called a palm (in Icelandic : Palmare , in English Palmer , and in Old- French Palmiour ). He also states that a derivation from the German word for wallen / wandern is possible.

A poor dwelling is also known as a "Balme" ("rock hole").

Topography, geography, location and traffic

Palmern was originally located on an important connection route over the Schwende into the Bregenz Forest to Schwarzenberg , before Bödelestrasse and Achrainstrasse and Schwarzachtobelstrasse (L 7) were built or expanded. Below Palmern is the Rotte Heilenberg , above Schwendebach . In “ Schematismus für Tirol und Vorarlberg ”, 1839, Palmern is not listed as an independent hamlet and part of Dornbirn, but the Heilenberg below is mentioned. Also not in the “ Provincial Handbook of Tyrol and Vorarlberg for the year 1847 ”.

The Rotte, about 2.5 km away from the center of Dornbirn, can only be reached via a short steep road (Palmern) via Watzenegg with normal motor vehicles .

Waters

The Eulenbach flows past to the north of Palmern and joins the Steinebach to the Fischbach further south .

Craft, trade

Palmern has not developed any significant commercial infrastructure in the municipality of Dornbirn. Agriculture still dominates here.

Individual evidence

  1. Balma is a word that, in addition to Dornbirn, can also be found in Lech (Balma, Balmagufel), Zürs (Balma) and St. Gallenkirch (Balmatal, Balmatal Seen), i.e. from regions of Vorarlberg that are very different in terms of linguistic history .
