The Roman Catholic parish church Dornbirn Haselstauden is in the district of Haselstauden in the town of Dornbirn in Dornbirn in Vorarlberg . It is the feast of the Visitation consecrated and belongs to the deanery Dornbirn in the diocese of Feldkirch . The building is a listed building . It is the oldest church in Dornbirn. The patronage is celebrated on July 3rd.

The church is a classicist stone building that is free-standing on all sides and dominates the center of Haselstauden. The choir faces southeast. The only tower is attached to the nave / choir in the northeast.

Location description

The former Stiglingen (now Haselstauden, 441  m above sea level ) is located on the traffic route from Dornbirn to Schwarzach - Wolfurt / Lauterach - Bregenz (L3 - Hofsteigstraße) and one of the most important connections via Alberschwende into the Bregenz Forest (L49 ) began here since ancient times - Achrainstraße , also "Wälderstraße"). The settlement also benefited from this. In addition to the important infrastructure, such as B. inns and stacking areas, also the pilgrimage church is located. Originally there was only a wayside shrine, which was expanded into a chapel and led to the construction of today's parish church in 1792/1793.

history

As early as 1249, Pope Innocent IV issued the Bregenz Benedictines (Hubhof Mehrerau) with a certificate of protection, in which goods and rights in Knie (Knuun), Stiglingen (Stigelingen) and more generally in Dornbirn (Tornburron) were named.

The chapel on Achrainstrasse (Wälderstrasse), first mentioned in 1642, was enlarged in 1650, first mentioned in a document in 1654, and in 1681 received its own pastor (curate). In 1785 pastoral care was elevated to local chaplaincy , and in 1790 it was classified as an expositur .

Today's parish church was planned by the Bildstein baroque master builder Johann Michael Beer, built in 1792 under the direction of Dornbirn master builder Siegmund (Sigmund) Hilbe (1743–1813) as a branch church and largely completed in 1793.

The font (font) in the interior dates from the end of the 18th century and was probably already in use in a previous building (chapel) in Haselstauden.

The high altar and the two side altars have been in the church since 1793. The carved main gate to the northwest was installed in 1816, the pulpit around 1820. In 1828 Alois Keller (1788–1866) from Pfronten installed the frescoes. The Stations of the Cross were installed in the interior at the beginning of the 19th century.

The parish church of the Visitation of Mary was renovated in 1857. The choir windows were also renewed. The costs for this amounted to 600 guilders per window and were financed by the two Dornbirn textile industries Ulmer and Salzmann and Matthäus Thurnher . The names of the three donors were given in the two windows by the high altar.

From 1881 to 1915 the Redemptorists looked after the branch office and chaplain of Haselstauden and built a monastery next to the church in 1886 (later an orphanage, now a technical school and kindergarten). Wendelin Pfanner worked here from 1850 to 1858 (his later name: Franz Pfanner , see also: Mariannhill Monastery and Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood ).

In 1895 the white marble tabernacle (designed by Maximilian Schmalzl) is installed. From 1896 to 1898 the frescoes by Alois Keller from 1828 are renovated (Jakob Bertel) and further ornaments are attached by Engelbert Luger.

In 1930 a two-storey sacristy was added to the southwest .

Haselstauden was raised to an independent parish on April 1, 1941 (under Pastor Alfons Marte by Bishop Paulus Rusch and Auxiliary Bishop Franz Tschann ). the decision was taken on February 7, 1941, but was not announced to the community until April 13, 1941 (Easter). Pastor Marte was installed on May 11, 1941 by the prelate and dean Alois Dietrich.

Today's organ was designed and built by Glatter-Götz ( Germany ) in 1995. 1985 to 1987 (interior) and 2003 to 2007 the church was extensively renovated.

architecture

The four-year nave of the church is about 17 m wide, 20 m high and with the choir, the church is about 41 m long. The ground level is about 441  m above sea level. A. The church building dominated the center of Haselstauden for centuries. However, the priority position of church building was broken by the construction of high-rise buildings in the vicinity .

The church itself is designed in the classical style as a nave with a steep, bent gable roof and large, dominant arched windows.

The choir was built structurally lower and added to the nave and is architecturally clearly delimited by the flattened choir arch (with a stucco clock at the apex ).

A statue of the Mother of God with the child is located above the main sandstone portal to the northwest . The two-winged main gate from 1816 shows the four seasons in stylized form in the lower area. In the upper area the old and the new testament .

The nave was painted by Alois Keller in 1828 and restored by Jakob Bertel in 1896/1898. In the middle of the nave is the fresco with the theme “ The Ascension of Christ ” by Keller. Above the organ, by the gallery, there is the fresco “Maria Heimsuchung” by Keller.

Choir

The choir is flanked by side altars on the left (St. Mary's Altar) and right (St. Joseph's Altar) and separated from the nave by a sandstone parapet. The floor pattern of the choir differs significantly from that of the nave and is of higher quality. The new and simple people's altar was installed on the occasion of the renovation in 2006.

Furnishing

The painting of the church by Alois Keller in 1828 shows in the ceiling medallions ( fresco ): The Last Supper , The Ascension of Christ and the Visitation of Mary . The ornaments applied by Engelbert Luger were supplemented by depictions in the stitch caps, which show the four evangelists, the Church in the Sea, Light and Noah's Ark, as well as a personified depiction of the six sacraments in the interstices. The seventh sacrament is said to be symbolized by the tabernacle.

High altar

The baroque high altar stands on a pedestal and comes from the Wettingen-Mehrerau Territorial Abbey in Bregenz. The altarpiece is flanked by six columns. The altarpiece is changed depending on the time during the church year. The main altar is dominated by an upper picture depicting God the Father and the Holy Spirit (painted by Josef Wiedemann, 1895). The tabernacle is made of white marble and was planned by Maximilian Schmalzl and installed in 1895.

Stained glass

The glass paintings from 1898 on both sides of the high altar show the " Annunciation of the Lord " on the left and the " Visitation " of the Virgin Mary on the right .

Side altars

The origin of the two side altars in the classical style with two pillars cannot be proven with certainty. Presumably these come from the Thalbach (Bregenz) monastery, which was abolished in 1782, or the Wettingen-Mehrerau territorial abbey.

The St. Mary's altar on the left has been changed several times and today houses a copy of the miraculous image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help with the inscription " Oh Maria immer hilf ", which was installed on September 15, 1892. In the tabernacle niche there are figures of the apostles Peter and Paul . The upper picture shows the representation of Anna herself third .

The Joseph altar on the right shows Saint Joseph with the baby Jesus by Matthäus Zehender , 1658. To the right of the tabernacle there is a statue of Saint Roch . The original statue of Saint Anthony of Padua on the left has been lost. Saint Clement Maria Hofbauer (city patron of Vienna ) is shown in the upper picture .

Pulpit and confessionals

The pulpit in front of the Marien Altar, which has not been used for many decades, was built by Josef Spiegel (Dornbirn) around 1820. The parapet symbolically shows the Christian virtues : faith , hope and love . The tables of the law are shown at the top of the sound cover.

There is a confessional under the pulpit and opposite on the south-western wall of the nave . These date from around 1820. The confessional on the southwest wall bears a statue of St. Gerhard Majella at the end .

Stations of the Cross

The stations of the cross were added at the beginning of the 19th century.

Gallery and organ

The curved, real gallery carries the simple organ and has a staircase on both sides from the main portal. The organ was built in 1995 by Caspar Glatter-Götz , Owingen , Germany. The organ has three manuals with 20 stops .

Tower and bells

The square tower attached to the north-west of the nave and choir has a pointed gable helmet and four arched sound openings. It is not open to the public.

In the tower there are four steel bells made by Böhler from Kapfenberg , which were raised on February 3, 1922. The bronze bells previously located in it had to be delivered in the First World War . During this time the bell from the Maria Hilf chapel in Jennen was used in the pilgrimage church.

Special

  • The Haselstauden parish church is the only one in the country that is allowed to give the blessing of the sick in the Lourdes style as an individual blessing with the holy of holies .
  • In the past, a broom was donated to the church when prayer was answered, mainly in the case of skin diseases ("broom offering").

graveyard

The cemetery is directly at the parish church on the southeast side and the rectory with traditional earth graves and several urn walls. The cemetery is under the parish office and not like the other cemeteries in Dornbirn, the city of Dornbirn.

Today's cemetery consists of three parts that were created at different times. The old cemetery is located directly around the church and is separated from the new cemetery, which was laid out around 1960, by a man-high wall with an archway.

In 2007, an urn field was built on the site of a children's playground to expand the New Cemetery.

The entire cemetery is surrounded by a wall, which is broken through by five gates / openings. Today's pilgrimage and devotional chapel, Maria, Gate of Heaven , was built in the new cemetery as a storage chapel ( Abbot Pfanner Chapel). In 2007 a small bell from the Rudolf Perner bell foundry was installed.

Directly northwest of the church building (choir) is the priest's grave with a wooden crucifix from the 19th century.
