Ludwig Mittermaier (born January 24, 1827 in Lauingen ; † February 22, 1864 there ) was a German glass painter and author.

Life

He was born the son of a decorative painter and attended elementary school in Lauingen until he was twelve. He then spent seven months at the art school in Augsburg, which was directed by Prof. Johann Geyer . As a result of the sudden death of his father, Mittermaier had to leave art school to work as a painter to support his mother and sister.

In the period from 1847 to 1858 he wrote many short stories, most of which were published several times. Mittermaier also published the legends of the cities of Gundelfingen, Lauingen, Höchstädt and Burgau (1849 and 1851).

From around 1850 until his early death Mittermaier devoted himself entirely to glass painting, which he learned as a self-taught . He designed the cardboard boxes for his leaded glass windows himself. In the period from 1854 to 1864, he received many orders, which were spatially distributed as follows: in Bavaria 60, Württemberg 46, Rhine Province and Sigmaringen 5, Baden 5, Austria 5, America 2.

After the death of Ludwig Mittermaier in 1864, his brother-in-law Bernhard Mittermaier took over the management of the glass painting workshop.
