The name Achrain denotes a hamlet ( 655  m above sea level ) in Dornbirn Haselstauden , a large parcel of land located in the same place and is also used as an area name for an area that is not geographically precisely delimited on the south-facing slope of the Tobel zur Schwarzach .

Origin of name

Achrain is a term used several times in Vorarlberg for localities, in addition to Dornbirn , Schwarzach and Alberschwende z. B. also in Kennelbach , Krumbach , Langen and Wolfurt .

The exact origin of the name "Achrain" in the Dornbirn municipality is not certain. The name probably refers to the Schwarzach ("Ach") and the "Rain" in the sense of a terrain edge (to the Schwarzach). In the “ Provinzial-Handbuch von Tirol and Vorarlberg for the year 1847 ”. and in the “ Schematismus für Tirol und Vorarlberg ” the Rotte Achrain is listed as a separate hamlet and part of Dornbirn. But not the Achrain as a hill / area name and / or a combination of several hamlets on this hill.

history

In 1326 a counradt vom Achrain is named as a district judge in Schwarzach, although the location of his court at the current Achrain has not yet been determined with certainty.

A little below the Achrain there is an old single farmstead ("Hof"), which is mentioned as early as 1395 as a property of the Emser Knights.

Otherwise, the Achrain was significant in terms of traffic history in connection with the important trade and traffic connection in the Bregenzerwald (see Achrainstraße ).

Topography, geography, location and traffic

The term Achrain is partly understood to mean the slope from the Ruschen plot to Alberschwende, which is oriented from the southwest to the northeast and sloping towards the Schwarzach, over a distance of about 5 km as the crow flies.

It is an outstanding hill that can be easily reached by motor vehicle from Dornbirn via Achrainstraße (L 49) . The populated parts of the hill are between 550  m above sea level. A. and 700  m above sea level A.

The Achrain tunnel (L 200) runs below the Achrain in the municipality of Dornbirn . The escape tunnel of the Achrain tunnel runs directly under the Rotte Achrain .

Waters

Several bodies of water arise on the Achrain, which drain from the Rotte Achrain on the Dornbirn municipal area in a northeastern direction (Alberschwende) into the Schwarzach . Before the Rotte Achrain, however (towards the southwest - Haselstauden ) they drain into the Stiglbach .

Craft, trade

Despite the importance of the Achrain as a connection to the Bregenzerwald, in the hamlet of Achrain located here, no significant commercial infrastructure has developed in the Dornbirn municipality. Agriculture still dominates here.

However, it is different in the Alberschwender municipality. In this hamlet of Achrain , locally important handicrafts and businesses were formed.

The Achrain was also used for low-quality viticulture in the lower area towards Dornbirn (towards the southwest - Haselstauden).
