The Schwarzach is a river in Austria that flows from Alberschwende over the Vorarlberg municipality of Schwarzach .

course

The stream begins as a combination of several smaller tributaries in the district of Schwarzen in the municipality of Alberschwende and flows from east to west at river kilometer 0.00 (in the middle of the Ried ) into the Dornbirner Ache (at river kilometer Dornbirner Ache 7.46).

The course of the Schwarzach is largely enclosed by dams and direct access is usually difficult. Along the Schwarzachtobelstraße (L 7), the Schwarzach flows almost parallel to the state road and can largely be seen clearly. In the area of the community of Schwarzach, the Schwarzach has been straightened many times .

Almost the entire course of the Schwarzach is a border water, which delimits various political communities, political districts and judicial districts in Vorarlberg (see also historically: Hofsteig ).

Tributaries

At river kilometer 10.68, in the municipality of Alberschwende , district "Schwarzen", there is a confluence of several small streams, including the Schwarzenbach ( coming from the municipality of Schwarzenberg ). This collection of small rivers becomes the Schwarzach here.

Significant tributaries of the Schwarzach are (seen from the origin) in the upper area up to the municipality of Schwarzach at river kilometers:

  • 9.84 the Hoferbach (Alberschwende),
  • 9.145 the Maier Bach (Alberschwende),
  • 8,975 the Gschwendbach (Alberschwende),
  • 8.84 the Bühelinbach (Alberschwende),
  • 8.68 the Albersbach (Alberschwende),
  • 8.44 the Hänslerbach (Alberschwende),
  • 8.32 the reut ditch (Alberschwende),
  • 7.695 the Stauder Bach (a border brook to the communities Alberschwende and Dornbirn),
  • 7.35 the Strickerbach (Dornbirn),
  • 6.265 the Rothenbach (Dornbirn),
  • 5.815 the Töbelebach (Bildstein),
  • 5.62 the Laubtobelbach (Bildstein),

as well as some other, smaller tributaries.

In the lower area from the community of Schwarzach, seen at the confluence with the Dornbirner Ache, the Schwarzach only receives one relevant tributary, at river kilometer 2.15, the Rickenbach (district Rickenbach near Wolfurt ).

Offending communities

In the upper area, the Schwarzach flows through the political municipality of Alberschwende and Bildstein (Farnach).

Along the Schwarzachtobel, the Schwarzach partially forms the border between the political district of Dornbirn (city of Dornbirn ) and the district of Bregenz .

At around river kilometer 5.50 the Ache flows into the municipality of the village of the same name "Schwarzach" and out of the municipality again at river kilometer 2.13 (near the confluence of the Rickenbach).

In the lower area, the Schwarzach flows through the political communities Dornbirn and Wolfurt .

Economic use

The Schwarzach was used economically for centuries. Mainly the water power for the wood production (sawing) and in the 19th / beginning of the 20th century for the textile industry as well as the stone extraction (see also: whetstone production in Schwarzachtobel and Schwarzachtobler sandstone ). Some of these companies can still be found right next to the Schwarzach (e.g. sawmill C. Steurer, Hefel Textil, etc.).

In Tobelstrasse, for example, there was a water wheel at the Fussenegger house and one at the Heinrich Troll whetstone grinder. The Johann Hefel whetstone grinder below the Kreuzfelsen was already owned by the previous owner, Marx Alois Sohm from Dornbirn, with a turbine from the J. Ig company since 1892. Rüsch powered with an output of 70 hp (51.5 kW ). This (oversized) turbine was then replaced by the new operators in 1901 with a turbine with 30 HP (22.07 kW) that was better adapted to the water throughput. For the power station of this whetstone loop, a reservoir was created on the site of the former Tobelmühle, which was also used as a swimming pond (only for men).

Name derivation

The name Schwarzach is made up of "Schwarz" and "Ach". As ach are flowing waters such. B. called streams and rivers. The name "Schwarzach" was derived from the fact that the Schwarzach flows through a forest. Because the trees hold back the sunlight, it was formerly called "shaded ache".

Individual evidence

  1. The counting of the river kilometers is continued across this confluence on the Schwarzenbach. In continuation of the river line of the Schwarzach over the Schwarzenbach, the Schwarzach has a length of 13.40 km.
  2. The political community Lauterach is barely affected by the Schwarzach.
