history

Judicial districts in Vorarlberg, as of July 1, 2017

The judicial districts that exist today go back to 1849. After the abolition of the previous jurisdiction, the transfer of legal affairs to the newly appointed princely courts was passed on by a declaration by the State Court Introductory Commission .

Based on the Innsbruck Higher Regional Court (to which the Court of Justice and Cassation Court in Vienna was subordinate in the last instance), the three regional courts Innsbruck (for the Innsbruck district ), Bozen ( Brixen district ) and Feldkirch ( Vorarlberg district ) as well as the two Senates Trient and Roveredo created for the Trento district. The district courts were subordinate to the regional courts or the senates, with 66 district courts in Tyrol and 6 district courts in Vorarlberg. These 72 judicial districts also formed the lowest level of jurisdiction.

Although Vorarlberg became a “state” in 1861 with its own state parliament and state committee , the court organization remained in place and the Feldkirch regional court was subordinate to the Innsbruck Higher Regional Court. The membership in the Innsbruck Higher Regional Court continued even after the dissolution of the Habsburg Empire. In contrast to other federal states, all district courts founded in 1849/50 in Vorarlberg remained in existence until 2017. The "judicial district Bregenzerwald" was renamed to "judicial district Bezau".

On September 25, 2015, Justice Minister Wolfgang Brandstetter announced that the Montafon District Court and thus the judicial district would be dissolved in 2017. Responsibility therefore passed to the District Court of Bludenz on July 1, 2017, and the municipalities of the Montafon judicial district became part of the Bludenz judicial district . In previous years, these plans had already been drawn up several times and were rejected due to the continuing resistance of the Vorarlberg state government .
