history

The chapel was first used in 1446 as Sta. Katharina and mentioned in 1481 with the auxiliary patronage of St. Barbara . In 1499 the chapel was destroyed by Austrian troops during the Swabian War and rebuilt in late Gothic style in 1509/1510. In 1554 the reformer Philipp Gallicius preached in the chapel and the believers from Zuoz converted to the reformed faith in the same year. The chapel became the property of the community and was used as a fire station.

From 1901 the chapel was used as a church again. In 1930 Zuoz was elevated to a parish and the building passed from the parish to the property of the Reformed Church of Zuoz, and in 1999 to the property of the Catholic parish. From 1950 to 1953 the chapel was extensively restored by the Catholic community, the glass windows were inserted and in 2000 the interior was partially restored.

building

The slightly larger new building took place in 1509/1510 using the old walls of the nave.

Outside

The building is an undivided structure with a polygonal choir. The roof of the chapel ( saddle roof ) and the tower ( gable-pointed helmet ) is covered with wooden shingles. A rose window ( wheel window ) is located above the sandstone-framed main entrance door .

Inside

There is a ribbed vault in the nave and a star vault in the choir. The gallery dates from the beginning of the 19th century. Visible from the gallery in the ribbed belt of the third yoke is the building inscription: hoc opus edificatû est òey òeatûm de Posiamo ano 15.

On the simple high altar stands a tabernacle made of light wood with carvings. The dominant altar painting behind it comes from the second half of the 17th century from Parma and shows the apparition of Our Lady, flanked by angels . The counter-reformer Philipp Neri kneels at the bottom right . The picture was restored in 1994. To the right of the altar is a statue of Our Lady with the baby Jesus , and on the left of the wall there is a glass painting by Gian Casty (1914–1979) depicting St. Martin represents.

The parapet organ was installed in 1968.

Four ogival windows show depictions of St. Niklaus von Flüe , St. Francis of Assisi and the two patron saints of the chapel. In the back of the chapel there is a peace dove by Gian Casty from 1957.
