The Reformed Church in Zuoz in Grisons is an Evangelical - Reformed church under cantonal conservation .

History and equipment

Alongside San Gian in Celerina and Sankt Peter in Samedan , the church, also named San Luzi after its patron saint, Luzius von Chur , is one of the three oldest valley and baptismal churches in the Engadine .

The church is first documented in the High Middle Ages in 1139. Even in the pre-Reformation period, a new choir was built in 1507 in late Gothic style (which points slightly to the south and therefore looks like the head of the dying Jesus Christ falling to one side ) and an increase in the floor plan of the church of the strikingly narrow church tower , which wears a pointed helmet over eyelashes .

Inside the church, the gallery and the organ there date back to 1912. The organ was pneumatically operated until 1970, and has been electrified since then. The choir is characterized by a star vault and has a wall tabernacle from the time the church was expanded at the beginning of the 16th century. The focus is on a table from the 17th century, probably after the end of the turmoil in Graubünden .

Window pictures

During the day, the church and especially the choir room are bathed in a spectacle of color through glass paintings by Augusto Giacometti , among others .

The individual window images are:

  • La spraunza ( Rhaeto-Romanic in the idiom Puter = "The Hope"), in the choir, by Augusto Giacometti
  • La charited (= "The Charity"), in the choir, by Augusto Giacometti
  • La cretta (= "Faith"), in the choir, 1987 by Constant Könz (* 1929 in Zuoz)
  • The Three Kings , by Gian Casty (donation from a family whose son was killed in an avalanche accident)
  • Faith (rose window on the theme of " Heavenly Jerusalem " above the entrance above the organ), by the Giacometti student Scartazzini from Bergell
  • Tree of Life and Living Fire, 2009 by Constant Könz
  • Sabbath rest, 2011 by Constant Könz

Church organization

The Evangelical Reformed Regional Church of Graubünden leads Zuoz, which has merged with Madulain , as an independent parish within the Colloquium VII Engiadin'Ota-Bregaglia-Poschiavo-Sursès . Previously in a pastoral community with S-chanf , Zuoz has been part of Baselgia evangelica-refurmeda Engiadin'Ota since 2017, the merged parish of the entire Upper Engadin.

Varia

In 1666, the municipal statutes stated that “one person from each house had to be present at the sermon and was obliged to sing along, otherwise a fine of 6 kreuzers had to be paid”.
