The Rothenburg chapel ruin (Thuringia) is located on the Rothenburg site on the steeply sloping northeast slope of the Kyffhäuser Mountains in the Kyffhäuserkreis in Thuringia south of Kelbra .

history

The chapel with a trapezoidal floor plan is said to have been built as a double chapel in the second half of the 12th century . It adjoins the Count's House to the north. In the western part of the ruin you can see a gallery over a double arcade and two groin vaults . It is through a door with a bridge to the upper floor with Palas connected. To the southeast, in the Romanesque-Gothic transition style, the curtain wall connects to the chapel made of red sandstone .

After the last members of the owner died in 1576, the castle complex and the chapel fell into disrepair. It was only during the Romantic period that Rothenburg was popular again as an excursion destination and meeting place. In the time before the fall of the Wall , military personnel found accommodation here. After the fall of the Wall, the castle and chapel ruins were bought back into private ownership.
