Kapuskasing is a city in the Cochrane District in the north of the Canadian province of Ontario . The city has 8,292 inhabitants (as of 2016) and is located on the Kapuskasing River of the same name .
history
Kapuskasing, like most communities in northern Ontario, was founded during the construction of the National Transcontinental Railway . The camp built by the railroad company on the banks of the Kapuskasing River became a settlement called MacPherson . In 1917 the name MacPherson was changed to Kapuskasing. Kapuskasing means something like "curve in the river" in Cree .
camp
During the First World War , the Canadian government built an internment camp for residents of "hostile" origins. Kapuskasing was the ideal location for the camp as the city is very remote. Some prisoners of war were sent to Kapuskasing. A small cemetery about 2 km west of the city shows the original location of the camp.
Settlement
After the war, the Canadian government tried to convince more people to move to northern Ontario. So they offered 100 acres of land to every family willing to settle in the north .
economy
During this time, the inhabitants of the north realized the value of the abundant black spruce . In 1920, the Spruce Falls Power and Paper Company Ltd. opened. the doors in Kapuskasing. Step by step people began to give up their farms to work in the factory or in one of the many logging camps .
In 1991 the factory became a workers' company. In 1997 all shares of Tembec Inc. were bought. The factory has played an essential role in Kapuskasing's development since it was founded.
