Karaikkudi ( Tamil : காரைக்குடி Kāraikkuṭi [ ˈkaːɾɛi̯kːuɖi ]; also Karaikudi ) is a city in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu . The population is around 107,000 (2011 census).

Karaikkudi is located in the Sivaganga district in southern Tamil Nadu, 85 kilometers east of Madurai and 92 kilometers south of Tiruchirappalli . The distance to Chennai , the capital of the state, is 426 kilometers. Karaikkudi is the capital of the Taluk of the same name (sub-district). Even before the district capital Sivaganga , Karaikkudi is the largest city in the Sivaganga district. The National Highway 210 from Tiruchirappalli to Ramanathapuram runs through the village . There are daily connections from Karaikkudi train station via Tiruchirappalli to Chennai and Rameswaram .

The city of Karaikkudi is the capital of the Chettinad region . Chettinad is home to the Nattukottai Chettiar merchant caste , who made considerable wealth in Southeast Asia during the British colonial era in the 19th century . In their hometowns, the Chettiar dealers used the newly acquired money to build opulent properties. Many of these Chettinad properties can also be found in Karaikkudi.

84 percent of Karaikkudi's residents are Hindus , 11 percent are Muslims and 4 percent are Christians . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 96 percent of the population as their mother tongue.
