The Karakatuwhero River is a 20 km long small river in the northeast of the North Island of New Zealand .

geography

The river has its source in the northeastern foothills of the Raukumara Range , around 7 km southwest of the 992  m high Pukeamaru and flows into the Pacific Ocean in Kawakawa Bay , 3 km northwest of the small settlement Te Araroa . Its catchment area is 78 km 2 .

State Highway 35 , which runs from Opotiki to Gisborne , crosses the river in the estuary .

Flora and fauna

The frog known in New Zealand as Hochstetter's frog can be found in the river's catchment area .

The river is popular with anglers.
