Te Araroa is a small settlement in the Gisborne District on the North Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
Te Araroa means “the long path” in the Māori language .
geography
The settlement is located around 17 km west-northwest of the East Cape and around 104 km southwest of Opotiki on the northeast coast of the Pacific Ocean . Gisborne , as the administrative city of the district, is around 120 km south and can only be reached via New Zealand State Highway 35 , which bends west of the settlement to the south. The closest settlements are Hicks Bay , around 8 km northwest and Tikitiki , around 18 km south. To the east of the settlement, the Awatere River flows into the Pacific Ocean.

The area around the settlement is traditionally inhabited by the Iwi Ngāti Porou .
Attractions
There is a 600 year old Pohutukawa tree in the settlement . It is considered the largest and oldest of its kind in New Zealand.
