Amber Lyon

Amber Elizabeth Lyon (born November 9, 1982 in Denver ) is an American journalist and photographer best known for her coverage of human rights violations during demonstrations in Bahrain and her reports on police attacks against demonstrators in the United States.

Career

Amber Lyon was born in Denver and raised in St. Louis . She attended the Faculty of Journalism at the University of Missouri and graduated with a bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism.

After graduating, she started working as a reporter for KVOA in Tucson . In October 2006, she won a regional Emmy Award for a newscast called Fantasy . She shared the Emmy with KVOA photographer Paul Hanke. In October 2007, she received her second regional Rocky Mountain Southwest Chapter Emmy for her best performance in camera reporting. A month later she left KVOA to attend Spanish courses in Costa Rica and Guatemala. In October 2008, she again won the Rocky Mountain Emmy Award for best performance on camera. In June 2010, she began working at CNN , where she trafficking in prostitution , the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and the group of hackers called Anonymous researched. Her reports focused on culturally and socially justified developments, demonstrations and government politics, human rights violations, organized prostitution and human trafficking as well as environmental issues.

Oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010

In July 2010, Lyon became the first female journalist to dive under the oil slick of the Deepwater Horizon and report live on television. Her report, shown on CNN, revealed how BP's use of solvents caused the oil to sink into deeper layers of water, which, while hidden, could not be siphoned or removed from the water. Lyon and her diving partner Philippe Cousteau jr. found oil particles floating three meters below the surface of the water and challenged BP's actions that made it impossible to purify the water. Their reporting helped CNN receive the Peabody Award for portraying the oil spill.

2010 Human trafficking and forced prostitution of minors (Craigslist)

In 2010, Lyon investigated the trafficking of minors forced into prostitution on the Craigslist website . Prosecutors from 17 states wrote to the website asking for the customer portal to be closed, quoting from Lyon's report. Craigslist then closed its customer portal worldwide. Lyon won the Gracie Award for Women in Media with this report .

Arab Spring 2011

In 2011, CNN sent a four-man film crew to Bahrain to investigate the role of social media and internet technology in supporting the Arab Spring in Bahrain, Egypt and Bahrain. The result was the program iRevolution: Online Warriors of the Arab Spring , in which Lyon participated as an on-air correspondent. The documentary won the 2012 New York Festivals International Television and Film Gold World Medal Award. Lyon and Taryn Fixel became finalists for the Livingston Award for Young Journalists for their work on documentary.

Before arriving in Bahrain, the team had made arrangements with locals for support and assistance during the planned eight-day stay. Interviews were planned with several people who wanted to speak about the ongoing civil protests and the desire for a change of government. During the preparations after their arrival in the country, the team found out that the majority of their contact persons had gone into hiding or withdrew their promised cooperation because they feared reprisals from the government. There were actual coercive measures, charges in court, job loss and home destruction by arson.

The interview partners consisted of doctors, patients and people from the civilian population. They showed Lyon how they were tortured during extreme police operations, but also after the security forces occupied the main hospital in Bahrain. Lyon also reported the systematic use of tear gas to bring the crowds under control. While the UN allows tear gas as a means of securing peace, the use in Bahrain led to the risk of suffocation for demonstrators. In interviews following the reports, Lyon found that the use of tear gas day and night can cause long-term health problems.

They evaded their official government officials and secretly sought out settlements to document human rights violations. They experienced immediate reprisals when they were detained under threat of the use of armed force. According to Lyons, attempts were made to confiscate and destroy her films during her arrest. However, it was possible to hide video recordings that were used for documentation.

The documentation iRevolution was produced and broadcast by CNN, but never on CNN international.

Lyon worked with Glenn Greenwald on an investigative basis to later present the results that the government of Bahrain, like other governments, pay CNN for "special content cast" to present their countries positively. CNN International denies Lyon's allegations of censorship or other wrongdoing, but confirmed they are receiving payments from the Bahrain Economic Development Board for advertising. This response from CNN International was criticized and rejected by Lyon and Greenwald as not addressing the main issue.

Anaheim police firearms use in 2012

Lyon also reported on what happened after the shooting of Manuel Diaz on July 21, 2012 in Anaheim by local police officers who were alerted to a call from the neighborhood. When the officers arrived and approached a group, three men began to flee. During the chase, the unarmed Diaz was fatally shot by one of the officers.

In the protests and riots that followed, police used riot gear to control the crowd. While trying to cover the exchange of fire, Lyon and her colleague Tim Pool were shot by members of the Anaheim Police Department. The incident was recorded on video as it was being filmed live. Lyon reported that she had to hide between two trucks for a few minutes to avoid being hit.

Internal whistleblowing about CNN's presentation of the demonstrations in Bahrain

On September 5, 2012, Lyon, with the help of Glenn Greenwald, revealed that CNN had never broadcast its documentary about Bahrain internationally. In an article by Greenwald in the Guardian, Lyon accused the broadcaster of censoring the documentation because the regime is a paying customer of the broadcaster. The article also reveals that the government of Bahrain, like other governments around the world, is paying CNN for special content that presents their countries in a good light.

On September 29, 2012, Lyon appeared in the Infowars program and described her research into human rights violations by Bahrain, an ally of the United States. She said CNN and the US government had pressured her to suppress the news. Bahrain is paying CNN for positive coverage on the news. Also Kazakhstan and Georgia would pay for a positive presentation by CNN.

In March 2013, the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency reported that the main Slovak news website had reported Lyon's statement that CNN had instructed it to be selective and false in order to influence public opinion in favor of a direct attack on Iran and Syria. This is also a common practice at CNN.

Peace, Love, and Pepper Spray

In October 2013 Lyon self-published a book: Peace, Love and Pepper Spray , a photo essay on demonstrations in the USA.

Advocacy of psychoactive drugs

In 2014, Lyon founded a website, Reset.me, and an affiliate advocacy group for the emotional healing effects of certain psychoactive drugs. She draws on her own experience and research into the history of the use of these drugs.
