Karel Bohuš Kober (born December 13, 1849 Tábor ; † October 2, 1890 Prague ) was a Czech athlete and writer.

Life

He was the son of one of the leading Czech publishers Ignác Leopold Kober , who published the first Czech encyclopedia. He attended the academic high school in Prague and the Hermann Educational Institute in Vienna . At the age of fourteen he and other friends were sentenced to five years in prison for preparing an assassination attempt on Emperor Franz Joseph I.

But after just one year (1865) the emperor issued an amnesty . After his return to Prague, his father fell seriously ill and prepared his son to take over the publishing house. His father died in 1866. Although Kober took over the company, it quickly led to bankruptcy .

person

Kober was known more as a publisher and athlete than as a writer. In Prague he founded a fencing club and a rowing club and was involved in the Sokol gymnastics club . He was also an avid chess player and composed some chess problems.

Works

He wrote some brochures about the sport. The first booklet, Introduction to Physical Exercise (Úvod do tělocviku) was published when he was fourteen. On chess he wrote the books Manual of Chess Game (Příruční hra šachovní) and Chess Game (Hra v šachy), which were coveted at the time .

Some of his few other literary works were not even published. Worth mentioning is his book that he wrote when he was twenty-four: Winter Evenings (Zimní večery). An interesting text with images of interpersonal relationships and poverty, balanced with idyllic moments and the parodic description of the pets that lived in the families. His novella Two Summers in Jánské Lázně (Dvě léta v Janských Lázních) was somewhat more extensive . The novella represents the fiction prose of 1883.

From the collection of stories From Different Circles (Z různých kruhů) only the first part appeared. Another book Bilder (Obrazy) was only available as a manuscript and could not be published due to financial problems of the publisher.

As a translator, he worked on the works of Hans Christian Andersen .
