Karel Ignác Thám
Karel Václav Ignác Thám (born November 4, 1763 in Prague ; † March 7, 1816 there ) was a Czech writer , lexicographer and translator .
Life
The son of a cook with Count Waldstein and brother of the writer Václav Thám , attended the Prague grammar school from 1775 to 1780, later studied philosophy and received his doctorate at the Charles University in Prague . After graduating, he worked in Prague's Bibliotheca nationalis bohemica, where he cataloged old Czech literature. Probably through the influence of his work he became a patriot, an active member of the revival movement and defender of the Czech language.
He later worked as a private tutor for Czech, French and German. In 1803 he gave lectures at the academic high school on the subject of the character of the Slavs, then on the origin, fate, perfection, usefulness and importance of the Bohemian language . Since he could not get a permanent job in Prague, he went to Vienna , but had no success there either. After his return, Thám fell ill with pneumonia and fell into financial difficulties. His greatest patron during this time was above all Josef Dobrovský .
Works
Thám wrote treatises and specialist literature on linguistics and wrote patriotic pamphlets in which he also reminded the Bohemian nobles of their obligations to the nation and the people living there. He also wrote several plays on the same subject. He translated Macbeth from William Shakespeare and Friedrich Schiller's Robbers, as well as works by lesser-known authors.
