Karel Sladkovský
Karel Sladkovský (born June 22, 1823 in Prague-Lesser Town , † March 4, 1880 in Prague ) was a Czech journalist and politician.
Karel Sladkovský participated as a Prague student leader in the revolution of 1848/49 . He was arrested for this and sentenced to death in 1850, pardoned to 20 years in prison and released in 1857 due to a general amnesty. In 1861 he received an estate from the penalties. Sladkovský was a member of the Bohemian Landtag from 1862 to 1880 with interruptions . He was editor of the papers Čas, Hlas and Národní listy . He was a leading spokesman for the Czech national movement and keynote speaker at the laying of the foundation stone for the National Theater . Sladkovský was one of the founders of the Young Czech Party in 1874. He and František Ladislav Rieger negotiated with the government about the return of Czech MPs to the Imperial Council . In 1879 Sladkovský was elected to the same, but could not take up his mandate because of poor health.
