Kareponia is a small settlement in the Far North District of Northland on the North Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The name Kareponia goes back to an incorrect pronunciation of the name " California " by Māori sailors. At the time of the gold rush in California there was a brisk shipping traffic between California and New Zealand and Māori used the name for several places in the country during this time, of which the name only remains for this settlement.
geography
The settlement is located 2.5 km east of Awanui on New Zealand State Highway 10 . The closest settlement further east is Kaingaroa , which is about 4 km away, also on State Highway 10 .
