The 387 km long Kargat ( Russian Каргат ) is a right tributary of the Chulym in the West Siberian lowlands ( Russia , Asia ).

The Kargat arises in the southern part of the Wassjugan swamps at 143  m . It flows - always on the territory of Novosibirsk Oblast - in a south-westerly direction through the Barabasteppe in the south-eastern part of the West Siberian lowland and finally flows into the Chulym just a little east of Lake Chany (at about 110  m ).

The catchment area of the Kargat covers 7,200 km². Due to evaporation and seepage, the water flow in the lower reaches of the river decreases and at the village of Nizhny Kargat, 36 km from the mouth, is only 8.54 m³ / s. In the lower reaches the river is about 30 m wide, 2 m deep, the flow velocity is 0.1 m / s. The Kargat has no major tributaries.

At the middle course of the river lies the town of Kargat , where the river is crossed by the Trans-Siberian Railway and the trunk road R254 (formerly M51).

The Kargat freezes from November to the second half of April.
