Mohammad Karim Chalili ( Persian محمد کریم خلیلی; * 1950 in Qala-yi Chesh , Wardak Province , also Abdul Karim Khalili ) is the current second Vice President of Afghanistan in the government of Hamid Karzai . Khalili was appointed vice-president in 2002, and in 2004 he was elected to his current office following the election of Karzai. Since 1989 he has been one of the main leaders of the Hizb-i Wahdat , a party of the Hazara ethnic minority .

Chalili attended a religious school; he actively participated in the Afghan resistance during the Soviet invasion . He also served as finance minister in the mujahideen government in the early 1990s .

In a report by the Afghan Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) between 2003 and 2005, he was accused of being involved in human rights abuses.

His name is mentioned, according to a July 23, 2012 New York Times report that reported the existence of a mapping of human rights abuses by the AIHRC.
