Career

In his youth, Karim Hossam was considered to be the greatest tennis talent in Egypt. He played in the main rounds of the junior competitions of all four Grand Slam tournaments, with his greatest achievement being that he reached the quarter-finals in the junior tournament of the US Open 2011 . He lost this to Kyle Edmund . His highest placement in the junior tennis world rankings was 11th in March 2012.

In the professional field, Hossam mainly played on the ATP Challenger Tour and the ITF Future Tour . He celebrated four single victories in his career, all in 2013, on the Future Tour and a double victory in 2015. After his singles titles, he also reached his career high in the tennis world rankings with 337th place . He played his only match on the ATP Tour in January 2014 at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha, where he received a wildcard in the individual competition and against Richard Gasquet in the first round of the main drawstarted. He lost the game in straight sets 5: 7, 1: 6. After this match he was able to qualify for two main rounds of tournaments of the ATP Challenger Tour, otherwise he only played tournaments of the ITF Future Tour. Hossam lost his last professional match in June 2017 by giving up qualifying for the F27 Future tournament in Hammamet against the French Hugo Pontico.

Karim Hossam played for the Egyptian Davis Cup team between 2013 and 2015 . For this he competed in five encounters, with a balance of 1: 1 in singles and 4: 0 in doubles.

Betting scandal

In June 2017, Karim Hossam was interrogated by investigators from the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU) because he was suspected of being involved in match-fixing on the ITF Future Tour. He was initially banned from professional tournaments. In the following six months, Hossam admitted in the interviews that he had influenced the results of his own matches since 2013, for the first time at a tournament in Sharm el-Sheikh . He also recruited other tennis players. In these rigged matches, players were offered money to intentionally lose individual sets or entire matches. In this way, Hossam acted as a link between the betting mafia and tennis players.

On July 3, 2018, Karim Hossam was suspended for life from professional tennis tournaments; he also had to pay a fine of $ 15,000. The BBC reported that it had confidential information that Hossam was involved in betting manipulation in tennis even after his suspension.

His younger brother Youssef Hossam was also banned from professional tennis for life in May 2020 because he was involved in the manipulation of tennis matches from 2015 to 2019.
