Karimganj ( Bengali : করিমগঞ্জ Karimgañj [ ˈkɔrimˌɡɔndʒ ], Assamese : কৰিমগঞ্জ Karimgañj [ ˈkɔrimˌɡɔnz ]) is a city in the Indian state of Assam . It is the administrative seat of the Karimganj District . The population is 56,854 (2011 census).

Karimganj is located in the Barak Valley in southern Assam, right on the border with Bangladesh . The border is formed by the Kushiyara River , a branch of the Barak , on the south bank of which is Karimganj. The Barak Valley is surrounded on three sides by mountains and thus largely isolated from the rest of Assam. Historically and culturally, however, there are close ties to East Bengal (today's Bangladesh) and the city of Sylhet , which is only 50 kilometers from Karimganj. The majority language is not Assamese , the official language of Assam, but Bengali .

During the British colonial era , Karimganj belonged to the Sylhet district . In the course of the partition of India , it came to Pakistan (East Pakistan, today's Bangladesh), the eastern part of the district with Karimganj was added to India and incorporated into the Cachar district. Since 1983 the city has been the administrative seat of the independent Karimganj District.

National Highway 44 runs through Karimganj from Shillong to Agartala . Karimganj is connected to the railway network via the railway line from Silchar to Agartala.
