Karin Pfaller-Frank

Karin Pfaller-Frank (* 1958 in Leoben , Austria ) is an Austrian speech therapist and president of logopädieaustria, the Austrian professional association of speech therapists.

Pfaller-Frank completed an apprenticeship as a kindergarten and after-school teacher at the Federal Institute for Kindergarten and Hort Pedagogy of the Cross Sisters in Bruck / Mur and then studied speech therapy in Linz as well as a master's degree at the Danube University Krems and a doctorate in health sciences at the Sankt-Elisabeth- University of Bratislava .

She has been a speech therapist since 1978 and has held numerous teaching positions at academies of medical-technical services, which in Austria were converted into universities of applied sciences in 2005. In addition, she taught the special subjects of myofunctional therapy and logopaedics at the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences in Klagenfurt , the Joanneum University of Applied Sciences in Graz , the Innsbruck University of Applied Sciences and the Wiener Neustadt University of Applied Sciences . She is the founder and project manager of the university course in speech therapy at Danube University Krems and a permanent university lecturer. She also gives lectures at conferences, among other things.

Since 1986 she has been representing the professional association (formerly the Federal Association of Speech Therapy). Initially as a representative in the federal state of Styria , from 2006 as vice-president of the Austrian professional association. She has been president of the logopädieaustria professional association since 2014 . In this context, she represents the profession in Austria and internationally. She is a member of the Neurology Expert Group at Gesundheit-Österreich GmbH.

Pfaller-Frank also runs a speech therapy practice in Graz. She is married and has two kids.

Scientific focus

Her scientific and clinical focus is on myofunctional disorders, speech therapy interventions for rare diseases, function-oriented diagnostics, facial paresis, cleft lip, jaw and palate, speech disorders, speech disorders.

The most important publications dealt with the investigation of the relationships between structures and functions in the field of speech therapy / dentistry / orthodontics. As a student of Rodolfo Castillo Morales , Beatriz Padovan, Nelson Annunciato and Juan Brondo, the connection between structure, function and interactions became an important approach to practical intervention in speech therapy disorders. The central starting point for treating a disorder is the neurological basis.

In addition, she has made significant contributions to the formal legal recognition of speech therapy as a scientific discipline in the field of systematics of the sciences (ÖFOS 2012), the version of the revised international classification Fields of Science and Technology (FOS), which is known as Fields of Research and Development (FORD) was published in the Frascati Manual 2015 and its application is binding in an international comparison and especially within the European statistical system. Among other things, she has for the first time provided an approach to the socio-economic assessment of the disorders in the catalog of indications of speech therapy , in particular the determination of a national economic potential of speech therapy in the sense of the cost-benefit analysis , the national economic accounting of the effects and the long-term social effects of speech therapy therapies.
