Karl-Heinz Böckstiegel

Karl-Heinz Böckstiegel (born August 2, 1936 in Engers ) is a German lawyer emeritus . His core areas are international business law , international dispute resolution, and air and space law .

Life

Böckstiegel studied in Heidelberg, Hamburg, Bonn, Cologne, Boston, Geneva, The Hague and Paris. He received his doctorate in 1962 with a thesis on The General Principles of International Law on Deprivation of Property: An Inquiry into Article 1 of the Additional Protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights . After completing his law degree, Böckstiegel worked as a partner in a business advisory law firm in Düsseldorf . In 1971 he completed his habilitation at the University of Cologne on The State as a contractual partner of foreign private companies with Ignaz Seidl-Hohenveldern . Böckstiegel then became a permanent scientist and professor at the Institute for International and Foreign Public Law at the University of Cologne.

Between 1975 and 2001, Böckstiegel headed the Cologne Institute for Air and Space Law , the leading institute in the German-speaking area, as the successor to the institute's founder, Alex Meyer . At the same time, he held the chair for international law, European law, European and international business law. Böckstiegel has also made a name for himself through national and international arbitration proceedings. From 1984 to 1988 he was President of the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal in The Hague. Böckstiegel has been retired since 2001.

Memberships

Böckstiegel is a member of the Technical Committee of the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization (ITSO) and Honorary Director of the International Institute of Space Law.

Honors

In 2011 the German Arbitration Institute (DIS) started a bi-annual Karl-Heinz Böckstiegel Lecture .
