Karl-Heinz Köhler (musicologist)

Karl-Heinz Köhler (born  October 24, 1928 in Blankenhain near Weimar ; † November 25, 1997 in Bad Berka near Weimar) was a German musicologist .

Life

From 1945 to 1950 Köhler studied violin with Erich Ehlers and musicology with Richard Münnich at the Musikhochschule Weimar , as well as musicology with Heinrich Besseler at the University of Jena , where he received his doctorate in 1956.

From 1955 to 1979 Köhler was director of the music department of the German State Library in East Berlin .

In 1965 he was appointed lecturer at Berlin's Humboldt University and in 1971 president of the GDR section within the IAML , of which he was vice-president from 1977 to 1980. In 1963 he became a member of the Central Institute for Mozart Research in Salzburg , and in 1965 a member of the GDR Music Council. From 1979 to 1991 he worked as an honorary professor at the Weimar University of Music. He completed his habilitation (Dr. sc.) In 1981 at the University of Halle / Saale .

Köhler's research related to source research; he dedicated himself in particular to the work of Mozart , Johann Sebastian Bach and the early works of Mendelssohn . His co- editing of Beethoven's conversation books , together with Grita Herre and Dagmar Beck, was important.
