Karl-Heinz Schnabel
Karl-Heinz Schnabel (born December 15, 1921 in Osnabrück , † June 26, 1992 in Darmstadt ) was a German painter of the 20th century.
Life
Karl-Heinz Schnabel studied in 1941 and 1942 at the Hochschule der Bildenden Künste in Hamburg and then switched to the Art Academy in Munich , where Adolf Schinnerer became his teacher. In 1947 he moved to Darmstadt and became a student of Paul Thesing . This was followed by a two-year course at the Werkkunstschule in Darmstadt. At Will Sohl he designed building ceramics and fresco painting and also worked in the studio of the sculptor Fritz Schwarzbeck .
A two-year stay in Paris , where he was a student of the painter Jean Jansen, was formative for Karl-Heinz Schnabel's artistic career . Since 1957 Schnabel lived in Darmstadt again. Since the early 1960s, he has been studying to study in southern France every year. Karl-Heinz Schnabel was firmly integrated into the Darmstadt artist community in the vicinity of the “Darmstadt Secession”.

After 1945 he produced oil paintings and drawings in parallel . From the mid-1950s onwards he concentrated exclusively on oil painting and, since the 1970s, has devoted himself primarily to watercolors , alongside pastel and ink . His painting of the 1950s and 1960s was sparse and existentialist; Painted in a flatness that is reminiscent of New Objectivity . In his later work he became a colorist .
