The Andorinhas Dam or Travassos Dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Andorinhas or Travassos ) is located in the northern region of Portugal in the Braga district . It dams the river Ave to a reservoir (port. Albufeira da Barragem de Travassos ). The Guilhofrei dam is about five kilometers upstream . The municipality of Travassos is located slightly northwest of the Andorinha dam .
The project to build the dam began in 1941. The construction was completed in 1945. The dam is used to generate electricity. It is owned by the HDN .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 25 m above the foundation level. The top of the wall is at a height of 191.2 m above sea level . The length of the wall crown is 103.5 m and its width 1.8 m. The volume of the structure is 12,000 m³.
The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 450 m³ / s can be discharged via the flood relief. The design flood is 450 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 1,000 years.
Reservoir
With the normal storage target of 185.7 m (maximum 189.1 m at high water), the associated reservoir extends over an area of around 0.21 km² and holds 1.2 million m³ of water.
power plant
The Andorinhas power plant is one of the smaller hydropower plants in Portugal with an installed capacity of 8.8 MW . The average annual production is 19 million kWh . There are two Francis turbines in operation.
