Karl-Josef Müller

Karl-Josef Müller (born March 31, 1937 in Ostwig ; † April 20, 2001 in Mainz ) was a German composer and musicologist.

Life

After graduating from high school at the Benedictine High School in Meschede, Müller studied school music, musicology and music psychology at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz with Ernst Laaff , Arnold Schmitz, Werner Fussan and Albert Wellek, among others . At the same time, he devoted himself to compositional and analytical studies with Werner Fussan and Mauricio Kagel and published articles and writings on the music of the 20th century . In 1969 he received his doctorate in hellmut federhofer Dr. phil. In 1976 Müller was appointed professor for group improvisation and music theory in Berlin, and in 1978 professor for composition and music theory at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts . He also held teaching positions at the universities of Bonn and Mainz.

Müller has received prizes and commissions from public institutions such as the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Culture, Südwestrundfunk, the Bach Society and the Associazone Amici della Musica Sacra Rome. Until full membership in GEMA , he was a representative of the extraordinary and affiliated members and in this capacity a member of the evaluation committee. In 1990, Müller founded the “Jugend Komponiert” competition in Rhineland-Palatinate and in 1992, in cooperation with the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Culture and the State Music Council, the “State Youth Ensemble for New Music”, the only ensemble of its kind in the Federal Republic to date, in which young musicians were involved Guidance from conductors were able to gain experience with contemporary music .

Publications

Müller devoted himself almost exclusively to the music of the 20th century and published music theoretical studies. In addition to articles on Krzysztof Eugeniusz Penderecki , György Sándor Ligeti , Bernd Alois Zimmermann and Isang Yun in specialist journals and commemorative publications, information on Penderecki's St. Luke Passion (Diesterweg) was published in 1973 , three articles in Perspektiven Neue Musik (Schott) in 1974 and the monograph Gustav Mahler in 1988 .
