The Karl-Marx-Straße is a city road in Trier , located in the district of Mitte-Gartenfeld . It leads from Brückenstraße to the Römerbrücke . The birthplace of the economist and philosopher Karl Marx is at Brückenstraße 10 . There are many cultural monuments, especially in the section of Karl-Marx-Straße. In addition, the street is the westernmost commercial street in the heart of Trier. Between Feldstrasse and Johanniterufer there is an entertainment district with bars , sex shops and brothels .

history

The street used to be called Brückergasse . The name is derived from the direction in which it runs towards the former bridge gate at the Roman bridge; the name has been documented since 1150.

The street has been named Karl-Marx-Straße for the section from the corner of Jüdemerstraße since 1947. The section of Karl-Marx-Straße from the Lorenz-Kellner-Straße intersection was previously called Schanzstraße , while the eastern section was part of Brückenstraße . The fact that the piece on the Karl-Marx-Haus kept the name was explained with "historical reasons".

Karl Marx traffic light Trier

Since 2018 there have been traffic lights with stylized traffic light men at the intersection at the beginning of Brückenstraße , which are supposed to remind of Karl Marx.

Historic buildings in the street

The following list contains listed buildings on Brückenstraße and Karl-Marx-Straße. Parts of the street are under monument protection . A detailed list of all cultural monuments can be found here . In the following only the most important cultural monuments on the road are mentioned.

Brueckenstrasse

The Brückenstraße section is characterized in particular by two buildings: the so-called “Venice House” and the Karl Marx House .

Karl Marx House

The Karl-Marx-Haus is not only the most famous building on the street, but also undoubtedly one of the most famous buildings in the city of Trier, as it is known that Karl Marx was born here. The front building dates from 1727; the facade was reconstructed in the 1930s based on the old model. In the middle of the 19th century, the house was initially forgotten and was only rediscovered as such in 1904 and has been renovated accordingly since then. Today the Karl-Marx-Haus houses the only museum on the life and work of Karl Marx in Germany. Today's museum was opened on the 100th anniversary of Karl Marx's death.

House of Venice

The “House of Venice” was originally two houses from the 17th century, both of which belonged to the property of the Carové merchant family who immigrated from Lake Como in Italy . The older building was built in 1656–58 by order of Ambrosius Carové under the leadership of master mason Joseph Weis, the younger 1683–85 under Thomas Carové. The house name “To Venice” has been handed down since 1777. When the shopkeeper Jakob Fischer converted the building into a restaurant with the name “To the City of Venice” in 1796, the two buildings were linked by a gallery-like side wing. In 1835 the rear building was extended by another floor; since then both parts of the building have been the same height. Karl Marx stayed at this hotel in 1842 and 1863. Around 1874, the hotel was expanded to include another building (Johannisstrasse 1b). As part of a thorough renovation of the building, the city took over the building in 1913. After heavy destruction in the Second World War, the historic building was rebuilt.

The building with its half-hip roof is built in the late Renaissance style; in a niche there is a statue of St. John the Baptist. It gives its name to the Johannisstraße that begins there. However, the figure is only a replica; the original is housed in the Trier Municipal Museum. The insignia of the Carové family can also be found below the figure framed by volute consoles.

The building now houses a neo-renaissance style pharmacy . The historical cellar is of particular importance. Even more important is the ballroom in the rear building, which has a splendid stucco ceiling, unfortunately in need of restoration, the quality of which would be appropriate for a palace.

Karl-Marx-Strasse

The Karl-Marx-Straße section is full of historically significant buildings with primarily historicizing facades. Many of the buildings also have historic wine cellars. Today there are shops on the ground floors of many residential and commercial buildings on Karl-Marx-Strasse, as Karl-Marx-Strasse is the westernmost commercial street in the heart of Trier. The most famous building on Karl-Marx-Strasse is the “Im Herrgottchen” house, built in the 18th century in the Baroque style with a hipped roof. However, some parts of the building are significantly older. Below is also a presumably medieval cellar. Today the building is the flower shop "A und A Floristik".
