Karl-Nikolaus Peifer

Karl-Nikolaus Peifer (* 1962 in Dortmund ) is a German lawyer and director of the Institute for Media Law and Communication Law at the University of Cologne .

Life

Peifer was born in Dortmund. After graduating from high school, he trained as a banker. From 1985 to 1989 he studied law in Trier and Bonn. He passed his first state examination in 1989, his legal clerkship in the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court with training stations in Duisburg, Düsseldorf, New York (Shearman & Sterling) and Houston (German-American Chamber of Commerce). He completed the second exam in 1992 in Düsseldorf. He then did his doctorate at Bielefeld University on the subject of copyright and broadcasting law, advertising breaks in feature films. The research on this was carried out during a grant at the Max Planck Institute for Patent, Copyright and Competition Law in Munich (today: Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition ) in Munich. Peifer completed research stays in Rome and Florence. After receiving his doctorate in 1994, he worked as an assistant at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel at the Institute for European and International Private and Civil Procedure Law. There he completed his habilitation in May 2000 with the thesis Individuality in Civil Law. In 2000 he held a chair at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich ( Gerhard Schricker ), and in 2001 he took up a professorship at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) . From there he moved to the Ruhr University in Bochum in 2002 and to the University of Cologne in 2004. In 2003 Peifer was appointed judge at the Hamm Higher Regional Court (4th Senate - competition, trademark and copyright law). In 2013 he moved to the press senate of the OLG Cologne (15th civil senate) and from there in 2015 to the 6th senate responsible for copyright, competition, trademark and design law. Since 2005 Peifer has been director of the Institute for Media Law and Communication Law at the University of Cologne, and since 2006 director of the Institute for Broadcasting Law at the University of Cologne. Peifer researches industrial property rights and copyright as well as media law.
