Karl Adolf Rössler

Karl Adolf Rössler , also Carl Adolph Rössler , (born April 6, 1814 in Usingen , † August 31, 1885 in Wiesbaden ) was a German lawyer , civil servant , painter and butterfly researcher.

Life

Karl Adolf Rössler was born in 1814 as the son of the government councilor Christian Rößler († 1816). After attending grammar school in Weilburg from 1826 to 1831, he studied law in Heidelberg . In 1835 he passed the state examination. He then worked as a judicial and criminal court accessist in Wiesbaden . From 1838 he was an official advisor in Eltville .

The 26-year-old Rössler went to Paris in 1840 . It is not known whether Rössler had previously self-taught painting or whether he had taken lessons. The only indication of Rössler's training in Paris is an entry in the register of copyists at the Musée du Louvre . Rössler is listed there as a student of Paul Delaroche .

From 1841 Rössler lived in Wiesbaden until his death. There he initially worked as a government attorney. From 1846 to 1849 he was an archivist and official secretary at the Court of Appeal . From 1849 he was judicial secretary, from 1856 court judge assessor, from 1858 court and appellate judge and from 1866 royal Prussian appellate judge. He retired in 1880.

In addition to his legal and artistic work, Rössler was also a recognized butterfly researcher. He published two monographs on the Nassau fauna , as well as articles in the yearbooks of the Nassau Association for Natural History and in entomological newspapers. Otto Staudinger named the butterfly species lygris roessleraria after him.
